“A Womb for an Adult” production residency by Viktorija Ilioska

10th – 21st November 2021

@ Youth Cultural Centre

As part of the program Other Spaces, Lokomotiva creates a space for production, creation of knowledge and reflection on diverse issues concerning our future and topics related to social justice, the environment, post humanity, the Anthropocene, cultural policies, queer and feminist issues, etc. In that regard, we are supporting Viktorija Ilioska, a performer and choreographer who will work in Skopje on the development of her piece A Womb for an Adult in the period between November 10 and November 21. The research, which started in Germany and was partially developed in Skopje during the summer, will have its final stage of development in Skopje and later its premiere at the Theater Neben Dem Turm, Marburg on December 10 and 11 (TNT https://www.theaternebendemturm.de/).

A Womb for an Adult is imagined to be a stage-dance performance, where the main focus is drawn to re-creating a body and space: a body in space, but also space as a body generating a particular sensation. More precisely, Ilioska is proposing an extensive panorama space permeated with bodies and objects through which the performers are exploring a visual dramaturgy of a playground. Stage setting is thought of as a space deriving its meaning from two places that are inherently interconnected: a construction site and a playground, both of them investigated through the dramaturgy of landscape. The performers interact with objects that inhabit the space and are conceptually divided into tools and toys, challenging the act of labor into an act of play.

Ilioska spent two months in Skopje, doing research on the interdependency between different materialities. Practicing relational ecology, she worked on envisioning an extensive panorama space invaded by objects, plants, water, sand, fur, living organisms, but at the same time, space full of words, affects, voice, movement, and sound. Like a wide field full of gestures, implications, and interpretations, squeezed onto the surface of space while hiding the depth of meanings beneath that surface. The idea is to create an affective space, a space that can primarily seduce with its visual dramaturgy, where the audience can commit to their various readings through their individual sensations. A potent space that exists for itself, completely focused on its inner world, where the main curiosity makes you examine it and get in. Once you enter, it is a place detached from time that produces a state of zoning out, spacing out, or a state of becoming inattentive, distracted, and even mentally remote. Only in this state, the central preoccupation of the audience will be the conjunction between the performers, the objects, and all other agents on stage, which will finally come to converge with one another. The choreographic idea is to create a soft body in the movement’s continuity, a touched body: You touch yourself and I feel it because I see it” (Manning). The materiality constructing the bodies on stage oscillates between the categories of the natural and artificial, soft and firm, flexible and solid. Particularly, the tactility reveals itself in their intra-action: the softness of one body can be discovered when it touches the firmness of another one. This meeting requires uninterrupted movement, at times invisible, but every so often restless in its continuity. The quiet, soft, whispering bodies come together to turn into images, where the seemingly effortless movement hides the firm structure of choreography as a prosthetic tool.

Viktorija Ilioska, born in 1990 as a Macedonian citizen, is a choreographer and performer who nowadays lives and works in Germany. Since 2016, she is based in Giessen, where she is finishing her MA in Choreography and Performance at the Institute of Applied Theatre Studies at JLU Giessen, under the mentorship of Bojana Kunst and Xavier Le Roy. Ilioska is actively working on programs for support and development of contemporary dance and performance, both collaborating with institutions and strengthening the independent scene. In 2010, as a member of the Nomad Dance Academy, she produced her first production “I am always watching you”, which is actively exposing the audience and talking about mechanisms of surveillance. This piece was later performed at the festivals in Ljubljana (2010), New York (2011), Skopje, and Bitola (2012). After her graduation, Viktorija received a Dance Web Scholarship in Vienna and completed the program under the mentorship of Chris Haring and David Wampach. Amongst her recent works is the long-term performative research project “It could be something very minimal”, which she started in 2018 with Patrick Faurot and Max Smirzitz. This project is looking for the ways of constant audible, visual and perceptive alteration of the body and was shown at LAB and Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt. In her last solo piece, “Figure it out!” (2019), Viktorija asks 100 questions through the format of a self-interview. Playing with different forms of provocation, she addresses the notions of identity and political female representation in the public sphere. Her current research consists of working and experimenting with certain objects and materials and searching for different bodily support systems. Her latest production “Womb of an Adult” (2020) is building an extensive panorama space permeated with bodies and objects with which she is exploring a visual dramaturgy of a playground.
