We are closing the October/November edition of the Performance Platform festival (PPf) 2025 with CODOMESTICATION by Krõõt Juurak & Alex Bailey (Estonia/UK, based in Austria), a performance first created with their young child and now transmitted through workshops and rehearsals as part of the touring concept “showing without going,” as part of the “(M)others on tour” project. In Macedonia, it will be performed by Simona Spirovska together with her children. By engaging with alternative models of circulation, CODOMESTICATION reimagines how performance can take root in local contexts without the necessity of constant physical touring.
This presentation is happening with the support of Perform Europe as part of the (M)others on tour project, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of North Macedonia and Heinrich Böll Foundation.
CODOMESTICATION arrives in Skopje as a local iteration of Krõõt Juurak & Alex Bailey’s touring concept, reimagined and embodied by artist Simona Spirovska and her family. The work expands the notion of performance by placing care, interdependence, and everyday negotiation at its core. It invites us to rethink authorship and power, or, who decides, who follows, and how creation takes shape when the stage is shared between adults and children, artists and caregivers, the personal and the public.
In a time when the cultural field remains driven by overproduction and precarity, CODOMESTICATION insists on the value of staying with what is already present and existing, – with relationships, with needs, with interdependence and care. It challenges the idea that art must be made through constant mobility and endless output, proposing instead that art can emerge from domestic realities, from shared time, and from the mutual shaping of life and work.
Working conditions of productions are a central subject of interest here, as they determine who can make art and under what circumstances. Without reimagining these conditions, many voices, especially those of mothers and caregivers, risk being excluded from the cultural landscape. Supporting mothers in art is not a matter of special treatment, but of structural justice: it means recognizing caregiving as an act of creation, as choreography, as labor that sustains both life and culture.
For over two decades, Lokomotiva – Centre for New Initiatives in Arts and Culture, has been committed to improving the working conditions of artists and cultural workers, continuously advocating for more sustainable and caring frameworks of production. This year, as a partner in the Perform Europe project, Lokomotiva extends this commitment through transnational collaborations that explore how performance can travel and be produced differently, and can include artists in environments or circumstances where resources are scarce. Within this framework, (M)others on Tour contribute to the local and regional scene by introducing new ways of working together, voicing the necessity to reimagine institutions, and aligning with a broader European wave that insists art and care must be practiced together, not apart.
This presentation is happening with the support of Perform Europe as part of the (M)others on tour project, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of North Macedonia and Heinrich Böll Foundation.
